Ps Calvin was born into a Buddhist family but he never really practiced it; he just followed whatever his family did. In 1984, he went into a missionary college in Singapore for his “A” levels where he met Christians and they started to talk to him about God. During his secondary school days, friends had invited him to church. He did go a couple of times but it was more tricked into it then willingly. In any case, he was not interested. It was during his second year in college that he came across the poem “Footprints in the Sand”. He read it and it stirred his heart a great deal. It happened that he was also in the darkest year of his college. Somehow that story spoke into his heart and on Christmas Day in 1984, he accepted the Lord on his own at home. He was baptized in the Holy Spirit in 1985 and was baptised in water the year after that.
Calling into the Ministry:
After Ps Calvin was saved, he started serving fervently in church. He put his hands into whatever he can do. Soon his heart started to feel that it was still not enough. He was so anxious to do more and there never seems enough time to do them. That is when he started to contemplate if God is calling him to fulltime. He took no further action, however. It was during a youth camp that Jesus appeared to him, standing in front of him and beckoning him to follow Him. It was then he knew that God has called him to the ministry. Confirmation later came from the church leadership and he answered the call in 1987 when I enrolled the AG Bible school in Singapore, Bible Institute of Singapore (now Assemblies of God Bible College).
1987 – 1989 (Centre of Hope, Singapore):
1991 – 1992 (Philadelphia Church, KL):
1992 – 1993 (Emmanuel Assembly of God, Ipoh):
1994 – present (Kajang Assembly of God):
To be a man of God and influence others to be the same.
Phil 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”
It is only through Christ that I will be able to do what I am called to do. Not my own strength but God’s! It also reassures me that nothing is impossible with God as long as I partner with God.
1 Thess 5:24 “The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it”
This verse has been a reminder to me since I started fulltime ministry that it is God who has called me. This verse has been instrumental in literally keeping me in ministry because many times when I was about to give up, the verse will divinely reveal itself to remind me who is the one who has called me. That never fails to lift me up to stand on my feet again and go on for Jesus.
